The Whare Build
The Tapuwae Pae Pātūtū whare build brings together trades training, employment pathways, housing and hapū development.
Tauira gain practical experience by helping construct a relocatable whare on hapū whenua.
Once completed, the whare can be relocated onto whenua Māori and used as an affordable rental home for uri.
This means the project creates value at every stage right through education, practical skills, whānau support and housing.
What Tauira are Learning

Tauira learn practical construction skills through real work on an active build.

The completed whare contributes to the wider Ōkahu Inuāwai housing strategy.

The project supports opportunities for uri to return, reconnect and live on whenua Māori.

Preparing the site, organising materials and understanding how a construction project begins.

Learning how to safely use tools and equipment required across the build.

Working with the structural framework of the whare.

Supporting roof preparation, inspection and iron installation.

Installing windows and contributing to the weatherproofing and exterior of the whare.

Understanding hazards, safe work practices and responsibilities onsite.

Working alongside other tauira, tutors and programme partners.

Developing reliability, communication and practical skills that support future employment.
The programme began with 14 tauira and has continued through strong whānau and wraparound support.
Alongside construction, tauira have taken part in mātauranga Māori, driver licensing support, programme visits and engagement with local employers and community leaders.
The programme also continues to receive support and regular involvement from Te Kura Matatini o Taranaki.
